USW District 6 recently held a week-long school at the Fern Resort in Orillia, Ont., marking the school’s successful return after a hiatus during the pandemic.
“I am pleased that the district was able to bring back our week-long schools and offer our popular courses in a unique setting like the Fern Resort,” said District 6 Director Myles Sullivan (Ontario and Atlantic Canada.)
The school welcomed 100 Steelworkers members from Ontario and Atlantic Canada and offered them four of the most-requested courses: Unionism on Turtle Island, Arbitration, Bargaining to Win and Promoting Mental Health in the Workplace and in the Union.
The district also awarded 50 scholarships for the Spring School to ensure greater equity for local union members attending.
“The District 6 Spring School was a very valuable experience for me. Participants in my Arbitration course were from various Steelworker local unions in different sectors. It was very neat to learn that while we are from different workplaces, the issues we face at work and at the bargaining table are very similar,” said Steve Johnson, from USW Local 4610, in Cambridge, Ont.
“Steelworkers member to member education is specialized training that help members gain skills and confidence to carry out the work of the union. Congratulations to these 100 activists who have now levelled up on their union education,” said Sullivan.
Steelworkers education is a cornerstone to the success of our union and keeps our local unions and activist base strong. Courses are offered throughout the year, outside of the multi-course school. Please review the District 6 education calendar regularly as course information and scheduling will be updated when new information is available. To register for courses, please contact the USW area office offering the course or contact the District 6 Education Co-ordinator, Jackie Taylor, jtaylor@usw.ca for more information.
